Play Your First Song in 90 Seconds with ChordBuddy -- Amazing device attaches to guitar fretboard to make learning to play a breeze

Wouldn't you love to play the guitar around the campfire? Or enterain guests in your home? Learning to play the guitar is one of those items that seems to be on most people’s bucket or to-do lists, but the difficulty and finger pain that can be associated with learning leave a majority of people giving up before they even learn a chord. According to a study conducted by Fender, 45 percent of its guitars sold in a year went to new players and 90 percent abandoned the instrument within their first year as a beginner. The ChordBuddy guitar attachment makes the learning process simple, fast and easy for people of all ages.

The ChordBuddy attaches to the fretboard of most acoustic and electric guitars and has four color-coded buttons that when pressed play G, C, D or E minor. ChordBuddy breaks the learning process down into two steps. The first step is learning how to strum and play rhythm patterns with the strumming hand as the Chordbuddy helps train and strengthen fingers on the chording hand to get used to the often times uncomfortable positions they need to be in to accurately hit the chord. As learners progresses through the accompanying ChordBuddy song book, lesson book and lesson video app, they will begin to remove the buttons one at a time, until all the chord making tabs are removed and they are playing on their own without the aid of the ChordBuddy, which is the second step.

The idea for ChordBuddy first came to Travis Perry when he was 18 years-old but he decided to create the product years later after trying to teach his daughter how to play. “During my early years of playing and teaching guitar I thought it would be great to have a tool that could help people learn to play in a less frustrating way, and to be able to play a real song in minutes not weeks! Then when my daughter asked me to teach her a song and got frustrated with the process, I knew I had to bring my idea to life and help out other people that are having difficulties with it,” said Perry. “People want to learn the guitar to play songs not chords or scales, ChordBuddy allows you to play your favorite song in 90 seconds and has a user success rate of 93% completing the course.”

ChordBuddy guitar learning system is available to purchase as a bundle for $49.95 that includes the ChordBuddy attachment, instruction booklet, access to the free app that has lesson plans and a songbook with over 100 songs. ChordBuddy is available for right and left-handed acoustic and electric guitars as well as classical/ Spanish guitars. The company also offers a ukeBuddy for ukuleles for $29.95. For more information and to purchase visit www.ChordBuddy.com.

About ChordBuddy

ChordBuddy is a guitar accessories company based in Dothan, Alabama, founded by Travis Perry. The ChordBuddy is a gadget that attaches to the fretboard of an acoustic or electric guitar that helps make learning the four beginner chords, G, C, D and E minor, an easy process. ChordBuddy previously appeared on the television show Shark Tank in 2012 and made a deal with Robert Herjavec. Visit www.ChordBuddy.com for more information.

Safe Harvest Chicken Oodle Grain-Free & Gluten-Free Soup

When you're camping, it's not fun to come down with chills, a cold, headache or worse. Stores may be too far away to buy aspirin or herbal remedies, so you may decide to ignore symptoms and try to get through the pain or discomfort. Before you turn to comfort foods like candy or the age-old "feel better" canned chicken noodle soup, read the can's label - for it may contain more junk than healthy ingredients.

When my husband and I were young, our mothers boiled a big pot of water, tossed in some raw chicken, and forced us to eat their plain tasteless concoction. When we were older, we refused to eat any checken soup. Recently, when planning a camping trip, a friend sent us a new product -- Chicken Oodle Soup -- a Safe Catch brand that comes in a see-thru 13.2 ounce glass jar that serves a hearty portion for two adults, has a long shelf life and is sold at grocers nationwide. It contains Paleo, is Dairy-Free, Grain-Free, Gluten-Free, and Whole30 Approved® with no added sugar. Made with organic chicken raised without antibiotics, bone broth, hearts of palm pasta and hearty vegetables - including carrots, onion, Portobella mushrooms, celery. salt and black pepper. It includes 11 grams of protein per jar and is made in the USA.

From now on, it's our go-to tasty, wholesome soup.

IOSSO SEAM SEALER

Fabric seams that leak are annoying, yet so simple to fix. Seam Sealer from Iosso Products simply sponges on to create an invisible barrier, sealing out water without altering the color or feel of the material. Iosso Seam Sealer is as effective on modern solution-dyed acrylics, polyesters and coated synthetics as it is on cotton, cotton blends, canvas and other traditional materials. With the right seam construction, it even helps water repellency on vinyl and vinyl laminates.

Unlike products that leave an unsightly film, Seam Sealer is completely transparent. This makes it ideal for boat and RV covers, awnings, tents, backpacks and other outdoor items.
Seam Sealer is easy to use. The bottle has a built-in sponge applicator that's simply run along both sides of the seam. Once the threads are completely saturated, it's left to dry for 24 hours. If the fabric has experienced undue wear and exposure, a light touch-up can be applied. A 4 oz. bottle of Iosso Seam Sealer covers around 50' and costs $8.30.

For over 30 years, Iosso has formulated and manufactured a wide range of cleaning and maintenance products for boating, RV, shooting, aviation, residential and industrial use. Its high-quality offerings are environmentally-responsible and made in the USA.

The new SANDLITE Sand-Free Mat is as comfortable as any beach towel or picnic blanket, with the added benefit of its ability to repel dirt, sand and dust.

The SANDLITE Sand-Free Mat is available in a variety of colors and patterns. The oversized design allows one person to easily lie down on the mat without encountering any sand or dirt on the ground around the mat. Multiple people can comfortably use the mat for sitting as well. Outdoor Edge’s New Grill-Beam Tongs and Grill-Beam Tong/Spatula Cast a New Light on Grilling

I've tried just about every grill light known to man or woman over the past few years -- and all failed to please me. They were either bulky to hold, wouldn't stay attached to the grill, or fell apart shortly after purchase.

Now I'm a happy griller -- for Outdoor Edge, the company that combines functional design with the sharpest steels and hand craftsmanship to create high-quality knives and tools, has made the barbequing season a delight --- with the introduction of its new illuminating Grill-Beam Tongs and Grill-Beam Tong/Spatula combo. These innovative, patented grilling tools are so easy to use and lit up my outdoor barbeque perfectly.

The Grill-Beam BBQ tools integrate powerful, 22-lumen AA LED flashlights in their spring-loaded tong pivots to put the spotlight on your culinary masterpiece. Designed for versatility, both the Grill-Beam Tongs and the Grill-Beam Tong/Spatula feature unique sliding shafts that telescope and lock for the option of a shorter, more controllable 14-5/8 inch tool, or expand to a full 17 inches in length to safely work a flaming grill or campfire. Both Grill-Beam models keep the chef happy and hydrated with a built-in bottle opener. The Grill-Beam Tong/Spatula combo feature an added grill cleaning notch and serrated edge to cut into the meat and check for doneness.

Crafted of sturdy, dishwasher-safe, 304 stainless steel, matched with a heat-resistant Zytel glass/nylon handle, the Grill-Beam tools are built strong enough to lift a heavy roast and will ensure a lifetime of use. A clip mounted at the end of each Grill-Beam makes them easy to close and store away. They are also lightweight, weighing in at only 16.6 oz.

The Grill-Beam Tongs and the Grill-Beam Tong/Spatula have suggested retail prices of $35.95 and $39.95, respectively. The Grill-Beams are available at retailers nationwide as well as conveniently online at www.outdooredge.com. For more information on the BBQ sets visit the website or an Outdoor Edge retailer.

NapAnywhere - The Neck Pillow 'Reimagined.'

Sitting and trying to relax, my head felt heavy and I couldn't find a good position so I could take a nice nap after setting up camp. I was glad I had my NapAnywhere pillow along, because - after taking a few minutes at home reading the instructions on how to adjust it - I simply took it out from its flat bag, relaxed, and was glad it supported my head in the position I chose. And, in case I fell asleep, I didn't have to worry about it falling down and awakening me - because it comes with an adjustable strap similar to a seatbelt configuration. Ah, finally a nice thin neck pillow that is adjustable and fits nicely into my backpack, camping stuff, and more. And, it comes with a 100% manufacturer warranty and 100% guarantee return policy.

Available in crimson, black cobalt and lime, besides the strap, it includes a nice carrying case and step-by-step illustrated instructions. It's sold in numerous stores, but the least expensive price I've found is direct from the company at $49 plus free shipping.

For more information, check web site pr@napanywhere.net.

Here comes the new Febreze Laundry Odor Eliminator wash additive to give the laundry a fresh clean scent - maybe even if a skunk left it's scent on it.

Trekking's Extreme Ultralite Backpacking & Travel Towels

No matter where you're going or what you're doing, pack up one or more of Trekking's Extreme Ultralite Backpacking & Travel Towels. It's great whether you're sweating or drying off -- and especially useful if you're involved in archery, boating, fishing, picniking, camping, hiking, shooting and more.

I tried the large 58” x 34” towel that weighs under 6 oz and packs into very small spaces. It’s large enough to wear as a sarong or wrap, and perfect for swimming or bathing! It makes an instant shawl for sun protection, and a wonderful travel blanket for the plane, car or train. I even tried it to cover my legs while paddling my kayak! For the serious backpacker, the 3 oz. half-size 34” x 28” towel is just right. Either size dries so fast, you won’t think you even had it wet.

For traveling minimalists, there’s an even smaller version weighing about 1.3 oz and about 19" square. Use it as a towel, neckerchief or headgear.
The Extreme Ultralite Backpacking & Travel Towel dries faster than any other towel on the market. Unlike microfiber towels that can take time to dry, the Extreme Ultralite Backpacking & Travel Towel dries quickly and is ready to use again in no time!

These towels offer superior odor resistance due to their Silver antimicrobial technology, so no need to worry about funky odors that come from bacteria. The Extreme Ultralite Backpacking & Travel Towel will stay clean and fresher between washings!

Both beautiful and functional, the Extreme Ultralite Backpacking & Travel Towel comes in vibrant patterns and colors that won’t fade. These towels range from $14.95 to $59.95.

COOKINA Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet Is Perfect Indoors or Outdoors

Ready to take meal time to the outdoors this summer? The COOKINA provides the perfect barrier when you don't want to place your food directly on those grimy public grills when you are enjoying your picnic at the beach, campground, or park.  COOKINA Barbecue is the first-ever reusable grilling sheet that is 100% non-stick and PFOA free and allows for oil- and fat-free cooking that results in a tender, juicy meal that maintains grill marks.

With the COOKINA Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet you simply unroll it, place it on the grill, cook up your favorite barbecue meals, wipe it clean and roll it back up. No more having to scrub the community grill clean and no worries about possibly having an allergic reaction to whatever was cooked on the grill beforehand. With the COOKINA the company has broken the mold on the typical picnic menu consisting of sandwiches and chips and now allowing you to whip up hot and ready meals within minutes while still soaking up the sun.

I tried this innovative accessory and found it's the perfect solution offering home cooks a non-stick, easy-clean and healthy grilling & cooking experience. Ideal for using as an alternative to aluminum foil, users can utilize this product by placing the reusable grilling sheet over the grill to cook up dishes without having to use oil or needing to clean the grill afterwards. Additionally, users can still achieve the coveted grill marks on foods. COOKINA Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet is 100% non-stick and PFOA free, reusable, reversible, easy to clean and easily cuts to size, as well as allows for oil and fat-free cooking for a tender, juicy and tasty meal.

How to Use:
Step 1: Place COOKINA Barbecue Reusable Grilling Sheet on grill
Step 2: Place food on the sheet (and notice how none of the sauces seep through)
Step 3: Enjoy the easy-to-use, nonstick surface while achieving grill marks
Step 4: Simply wipe the non-stick sheet off and reuse it again

It is available at numerous stores nationwide, including Home Depot for approximately $14.99.

Seth McGinn’s Introduces the Plank Foldable Cutting Boards

I found the perfect answer when camping and trying to keep my meat nice and clean while cutting it with the new Plank Foldable Cutting Board. I tried two Plank Folding Cutting Boards (they come in three sizes - 8 x 16", 9 x 19" and 16 x 32") and are only .225-inch thick. The cutting boards are excellent quality and very useful for all types of cutting chores. Best of all, they're made from recycled materials in the U.S., are odor-free and stain-resistant, fold to about a quarter of their original width, and are designed with unique no-pinch hinges. Folding to a quarter of their useable size, they're easily stored in a tiny space, are functional, lightweight and, best of all, unbreakable. I used mine for a variety of chores - cleaning fish, slicing brisket and steak -- and surprisingly - when I ran out of counter space in my kitchen, I simply opened the Plank Foldable Cutting Boards and gained extra needed space. They wash easily and look as good as new each time used.

The ability of the Plank to fold, which makes it perfect to use and store in your camper or tent, also makes it perfect to take along on trips. Whether you are hiking, fishing, tailgating or embarking on another kind of adventure, the Plank travels easily. And should your Plank go overboard if you're fishing from a boat, there’s no reason to fret because it floats.

The 9X19-inch Plank, for instance, folds to 9X4.85 inches with a thickness of 0.9 inches and weighs just 20 ounces for easy transport and storage. The Plank is available at retailers nationwide tfor $17.99, $24.99 and $49.99 respectively.

No home or adventure should be without a Seth McGinn’s Plank. Be sure to stop by your local retailer and get one today.

Headquartered in Fremont, NE, Seth McGinn’s originally introduced his CanCooker in 2009. This unique outdoor cooking device allows you to cook a lot of food without a lot of work. Seth McGinn’s has now expanded his food preparation product line with the introduction of the Plank.

Spending a lot of time outdoors means that zippers and snaps will inevitably become difficult to work with.  E-Z Snap zipper and snap lubricant from Iosso Products reduces wear, friction and binding caused by water, tree sap, insects and more.

E-Z Snap protects snaps, zippers, hinges and hardware from the corrosion, dust and grime that makes these devices stick.  Its non-hazardous formula does not contain any solvents, silicone or Teflon.  It will not stain or damage surrounding fabric or surfaces.  And it won’t evaporate or run in hot weather.

The lubricant is also easy to use.  RV owners simply clean the surface removing any sand, dirt or debris and put a small amount of E-Z Snap directly to the head of a snap, along a zipper or on the barrel of a hinge.  It is easily distributed as the zipper or snap is used.  To prolong the life and usability of zippers and snaps, RV enthusiasts should reapply E-Z Snap periodically and prior to storage periods.

Iosso Products has been supplying innovative and environmentally friendly products to the outdoor and RV markets for over 25 years.   From Iosso Products, a 1.5 ounce tube of E-Z Snap has a retail price of $5.46.

PaceCoach -- First-Of-Its Kind, Computerized Walking Coach Maximizes Every Step for Ultimate Fat Burn

Clinical research performed at the University of Virginia has revealed that mixing the pace of your daily walk can lead to dramatic results.  In fact, simply changing your speed can shed up to four times more body fat and five times more belly fat than maintaining the same speed every walk.

Walking is the most popular form of exercise in America, with nearly 110 million doing it regularly to stay in shape.  While camping, you certainly do a lot of walking along the campground trails! Until now, the only way to gauge the effectiveness of walking was by using a pedometer, which simply measures what you are doing, not what you should be doing.

Avid and casual walkers can now get the maximum benefit out of each walk with a first of its kind, computerized walking coach.  The PaceCoach™ is revolutionizing the benefits of walking.  It is much more than a pedometer. The easy to wear device is a fat burning accelerator with an onboard, computerized “coach” designed to continuously monitor walking speeds and establish the time goals needed to ensure the maximum benefits out of every walk. Thanks to clinical research, walkers can get the most out of every step and burn up to four times more body fat on their daily walk with Mixed Pace™ walking and the PaceCoach.™

Physiology Laboratory at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. “Anyone interested in a mixed pace walking routine and burning more body fat will benefit from a proper aid to support their efforts such as PaceCoach.”Weltman’s study, Effect of Exercise Training Intensity on Abdominal Visceral Fat and Body Compositionhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2730190 was published in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the official journal or the American College of Sports Medicine.

The PaceCoach’s memory unit contains the fat burning formula based directly on the results from the clinical study.  PaceCoach creates a personalized, day-by-day walking program customized just for the user.  It mixes shorter, quicker walks, with longer, moderate paced walks.  When the PaceCoach workout program is followed, the results are almost five times more effective than walking at one constant pace. The study’s participants using a Mixed Pace walking program dropped four times more overall body fat, five times more belly fat, three times more thigh fat, and two additional inches from the waist.

Small and easy-to-use, The PaceCoach automatically guides a uyser during their daily walks and updates a walker every 30 seconds to maximize fat burning results. It sets the perfect pace and helps you burn more fat. The battery operated PaceCoach is easy to wear, durable and is available for $19.95 from web site www.pacecoach.com. EB Sport Group of Yonkers, New York, one of the largest manufacturers of walking pedometers conceived, manufacturers and distributes the PaceCoach.                             -

Your Umbrella Won't Fly Away Using the SandGrabber

The SandGrabber™ is a Serious Safety Tool with solid patented
engineering.  It's not a toy or gimmick like its competitors that only work in light winds -- but I personally tested it on the windiest day at the beach and found it really held umbrellas in place in winds of 30 MPH! This product is safe and assures you the umbrella won't fly out and possibly cause injury to another person. The company, Bee Tee Incorporated. has tested The SandGrabber™ against some of it’s competition, and The SandGrabber™ clearly outperforms everyone tested. It works simply and quickly:

1)  Twist The SandGrabber™ into the sand until the sand is just below the thumbscrew.
2)  Place the umbrella pole into The SandGrabber™.
3)  Tighten the thumbscrew.

It's that easy and, this product works so well that the New Jersey Institute of Technology honored Bee Tee for inventing this product with its prestigious 'special award.'

Ultimate Key Ring Prevents Sinking of Keys, Tools and More

Water can be a black hole for boaters, anglers, swimmers and other outdoor enthusiasts' keys and small tools.  And, no doubt, while you're camping, you'll probably rent or take your own boat out on the river/lake -- or stand on a dock. What happens if you drop your key into the water by accident? Nothing anymore, thanks to the innovative Key Buoy from Davis Instruments.  If the Key Buoy should fall into the water, the patented, self-inflating key ring automatically pops open, inflates its air tube and rises to the surface.

In as little as 60 seconds, owners can get back their keys, small tools or deck plate keys weighing up to 2.8 oz.  A convenient, bright orange 14" air tube makes the versatile Key Buoy easy to spot and retrieve.  It maintains buoyancy for over an hour.

A great, practical gift, the compact Key Buoy measures just 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1/2" and weighs merely 1.1 oz.  Made entirely out of plastic, it can be recycled after use.  Suitable for single use only, owners should keep a spare on hand.

The suggested retail price of the economical Key Buoy from Davis Instruments is $6.99.

BEDDING FOR CAMPERS

Blackstone Outdoor Gear (previously known as Blackwater Outdoor Gear) Has Introduced A Must-Have Bedroll Protector

Tom Wandel, President of Blackwater Outdoor Gear, conceived the idea of a protector after a disastrous camping trip during which his sleeping bag roll slipped off his back and fell into a creek he was crossing. "My sleeping bag was soaking wet, of course. That night, I was miserable and cold; the trip was about ruined as far as I was concerned," he recalled.

His creation - which no one before ever thought of - let alone made one - is The Bedroll Protector . . .designed to keep sleeping bags and pads clean and dry. It's easy to use (just tuck in the sleeping bag and pad, zip and roll it up) and easy to carry, according to Wandel, besides being water-resistant, double poly-laminated construction and heat-sealed seams. "The beauty of the protector' he added, "is how such an inexpensive, simple product can make such a huge difference in the quality of your camping experience."

Featured in the December issue of BMW Owners News, the magazine of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, Bud Meade says the Bedrolll Protector succeeds both in keeping you "dry in your sleeping bag" and keeping your bag and pad "together and dry while traveling." He points out that inside your tent yu can place other things on the open cover to keep them dry, too.

For more information on where to purchase the Bedroll Protector, check web site www.blackstoneoutdoorgear.com.

CAMP FIRE PRODUCTS

FiAir -- The handy little blower to feed your fires

This is the first and only truly portable, handheld, battery powered blower on the grill and fireplace accessories market, according to the manufacturer. It's designed specifically to nurture wood and charcoal fires with precision and control. It has many advantages over using your breath to get the fire going, including:

-- coaxing lit coals and kindling to life

-- accelerating hot spots

-- rapidly increasing cooking temperature for a quick sear

-- spreading flames to evenly consume fuel

-- stoking waning fires and refreshing fires as new fuel is added

-- it will work for years to come in kindling healthy fires, indoors or outside.

It's easy to use:

Light your coals or kindling in your preferred way. Stand a few feet away, point FiAir toward hot spots at the base of your fire and press the orange button. This is a powerful tool; starting too close could extinguish newly lit fuel. Then, gradually work your way closer to the fire, feeding airflow to hot spots from an optimal distance for about 30-40 seconds. Release the button and pause to see how the fire is developing. Continue by concentrating brief bursts of about 20 seconds each of FiAir on hot spots to make them even hotter. Then aim at areas that still need to catch or use FiAir to push and spread flames to uncaught coals or logs. Continue using FiAir intermittently to stoke and refresh the flames, as needed, especially when you add new logs or charcoal. For charcoal users, when most coals are covered with white ash, spread them out and place any remaining black coals on top, then stoke again with FiAir.

FiAir Tips:

Kindle Close/Stoke Far: FiAir is powerful enough to use at varying distances as your fire progresses. Fresh fires do not put out much heat, so you can kindle as close as you like to get the blaze goiing. As the fire grows hotter, simply pull back a foot or two and continue using FiAir to spread and raise the flame.

Give it a rest: Once your fire is burning well, do not run FiAir continuously. Overfeeding your fire wil burn through your fuel - and your batteries - too quickly.

Stoke responsibly: You'll like using this new tool, but always use absolute care when around open flames. As long as the fire is burning, do not leave it uncared for.

The FiAir uses 3 AAA batteries for the power supply. Using it in brief 30-40 second bursts rather than continuously allows batteries to recover a bit during use. It will continue to provide effective airflow for about 10 fires when used as directed, and excellent instructions come with each FiAir.

Made in America, more information on the FiAir is available at web site www.FiAir.net.

Enviro-Log 5-pound Firelogs Burn Up to Three Hours and are Environmentally-friendly

Enviro-Log®, Inc., an eco-friendly, consumer products and recycling company known for the greenest, most versatile firelogs on the market, offers 5 -pound firelogs that are safe for fireplaces, fireplace inserets, woodstoves, chimineas and campfires

Enviro-Logs are made from 100 percent recycled waxed cardboard, typically used to transport fruits and vegetables to produce processors, grocery stores and restaurants, to manufacture its earth-friendly firelogs. When compared to firewood, Enviro-Log Firelogs burn cleaner, have no added petroleum products, are perfect for outdoor cooking, are easy to light and very convenient, give off 50% more heat than wood, put out big, tall flames, burn cleaner than wood, emit 86% less creosote, 80% less carbon monoxide, and 30% ess emissions. It's also safe to burn two firelogs at a time.

I tried Enviro-Logs in my chiminea and loved the way they burned and also the heat emitted. They continued to burn despite the freezing temperature outside and the damp conditions in my back yard due to the recent snowfall and snowflakes! An Enviro-Log gives 50% more heat than wood. Next I plan to try them in my living room fireplace and know I won't have the usual odor and soot from regular fire logs.

Easy to store and usable in all weather conditions, they're even safe to cook over. I soon realized that I can take them when outdoor tailgating or for cookout events. The ash from Enviro-Log firelogs can even be used as fertilizer or potting soil. What I also loved about these logs is that they're wrapped in a heavy brown paper and all I had to do was place it, as is, and not get my hands dirty while starting the fire. I didn't have to keep moving regular logs together as the Enviro-Log burned beautifully with gorgeous flames.

Now available individually or in cartons of 6 Five lb. firelogs or 9 in a carton at local hardware stores, supermarkets, farm stores, Walmart, Sears and other stores.

NOTE: Please be sure you use the proper lighting techniques with your Enviro-Log Firelog for maximum efficiency: Place the firelog with the seam face-up. Tear off the long seam down the length of the firelog, tuck the edges to the side and light the ends of the wrapper. This helps release the firelog wrapper properly, allowing the wrapper to flame up and help start the firelog.  You can add a little paper beneath the firelog as needed.  If you have proper fireplace tools, sometimes placing one end on the back of the grate with the wrapper released as explained helps the fire run up the firelog and get started; you can then reposition the firelog in the grate.

Lake Mead RV Village Named a Top Scenic RV Park

Editors and consultants of the Good Sam RV Travel Guide and Campground Directory selected the nation’s top eight scenic RV parks from a database of 8,000 private parks, looking for parks with landscaping that rivaled the stellar landscapes of surrounding areas.

“Many RV parks serve as jumping off points to scenic excursion. Just minutes from Las Vegas, Lake Mead RV Village offers 115 back-in, pull-through and lake view sites with power, water, sewer, cable TV, picnic tables and fire rings. The RV park also offers 24-hour laundry facilities, restrooms and a dump station. Most sites also have Wi-Fi.

Along with a Bocce ball court, horseshoe pits and picnic areas, Lake Mead RV Village is walking distance to Boulder Beach and the River Mountains Loop Trail. Launch ramps and the Hoover Dam are also nearby.

Lake Mead RV Village has two meeting rooms for group activities with indoor seating and a deck with views of the lake. The on-site store sells firewood, groceries and RV supplies.

Firelight Camps Glamping Proves Not All Camping is Created Equal

Firelight Camps, founded by Food Network star Emma Frisch and her husband Robert, celebrates its first season of hosting glamorous camping or “glamping” this fall. Nestled in the landscape on the grounds of the La Tourelle Hotel in Ithaca, New York, Firelight Camps provides its guests with luxury camping and is taking reservations for the 2014 season, which runs May through October. But this isn’t your typical campground.

With the rise of “Glamping” AKA glamorous camping, there is no tent to pitch, no sleeping bag to unroll and no fire to build. Let’s face it, not everyone is an outdoorsmen, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the experience! That’s where Firelight Camps comes in!

Indeed, amenities found at Firelight Camps far eclipse those of recreational camping experiences. Guests can reserve one of six safari-style tents equipped with hardwood floors, a private balcony, a king or queen size bed, and hotel-quality linens. All tents are within hiking distance of the well-known Finger Lake Trail system and Buttermilk Falls State Park. After exploring nearby waterfalls and scenic gorges, guests can feast in the steakhouse, relax at the spa, or share a communal campfire with local wine, spirits, and homemade S’mores prepared by Frisch.

“Camping doesn’t have to mean roughing it. For us, it means spending time with loved ones in a beautiful environment without having responsibilities that break the magic,” said Emma Frisch. For those interested in more than their grandfather’s camping experience, or for those looking for a nontraditional honeymoon destination or just a weekend getaway, Firelight Camps is an adventurous alternative to a hotel.

While the camping facilities are situated on ponds, ravines, and in the forest, Firelight Camps offers a communal lounge where complimentary continental breakfast is served each morning, and where games, a community campfire, and a phone charging station are accessible to all guests. In addition, a bathhouse is a one- minute walk from all tent facilities and boasts two full bathrooms with hot water and a small sauna.

“Firelight Camps promotes lodging with a lighter footprint,” said Frisch. “Parts of our facilities are furnished with repurposed wood and materials, while all of our tents are non-reliant on electricity and use battery-powered lanterns.” Frisch is proud of their efforts in sustainable development and hopeful for the revenue glamping could bring to other local properties like vineyards and farms.

Eco-tourism, preservation, and self-discovery are just a few of the practices the founders of Firelight Camps hope their guests will immerse themselves in during their camping experience this season. Nightly rates start at $155.

For more information on Firelight Camps, please visit www.firelightcamps.com.

CAMPING STATISTICS

Camping is a true American tradition popular among families, students and young adults.

According to the American Camper Report, 38 million Americans went camping in 2012, 13 percent of the US population over the age of six. Although there’s been a slight decline in overall camping since 2011, camping is on the upswing for family vacations.

According to a recent survey conducted by Aramark’s leisure division, award winning food and hospitality partner for national and state parks, 56 percent of the respondents camp with kids under the age of 18. Families are camping mostly for recreation and are taking camping trips to spend quality time together as well as engaging their kids in outdoor activities.

Being intimate with nature and enjoying outdoor recreation is a huge impetus to planned camping trips. Seventy-six percent of survey respondents placed a high value on proximity to hiking and biking trails and 83% valued water recreation.  Thus, camping in National Parks is an ideal way to ensure plenty of scenery and access to outdoor activities.

In addition to the importance of outdoor recreation, other things families should consider when selecting a campground include:

Amenities –While some enjoy traditional camping in tents with limited amenities, others are evolving with more modern tastes, placing a large importance on the availability of retail stores, showers, bathrooms, washers and driers, free Wi-Fi or even zip lines and heated pools.

Proximity to recreation – many campers take part in activities such as boating, fishing, ATV riding and mountain biking. Considering distance to one’s preferred outdoor activity is important.

Safety – While camping is meant to be stress-free, safety should always be considered when selecting a site or area. For example, the presence of animals, falling rocks, troublesome plants such as poison ivy, or an area that is a target for lightening are all things to think about when planning a trip.

Scenery – Since being outdoors is the main reason families enjoy camping, selecting a scenic location can make it that much more enjoyable. Properties around lakes, mountains or colorful trails are desired locations for camping excursions.

Proximity to water – Although some don’t mind dry sites and they tend to be more secluded and quiet, it is important to consider how far away the site is from a water source. Being close to water is helpful for cooking as well as providing fresh water for drinking.

Almost 22,000 campgrounds exist across the United States. Below are examples of sites with a large variety of outdoor recreation making for great options for family vacations:

CLOTHING

Bug Out Clothing

I, and thousands of others like me, attract every kind of insect on Earth. And they bite, hard, and swell and itch and drive me crazy. But I finally found a solution to this problem - and that is wearing special insect-proof clothing made by Bug Out.

I sampled the head cover, jacket and pants and came away without one bite!! In the meantime, some who laughed at the Bug Out clothing placed over my regular street clothes were screaming and running all over the place away from the tiny insects that were chewing on their flesh and making them bleed - while, for a change, it was I who had the last laugh.

The bug repellent clothing is made of 100% polyester and even the no-seeums couldn't get through while I was taking photographs and not being disturbed at all. Best of all, this clothing could be worn over any clothing beneath it; insect repellent could be used without harming the material, and it was used and tested in the military.

The relaxed fit design features extra long sleeves, a three position pull-over hood with draw strings that provide a complete enclosure for your head, ears and neck. Easy to see through and pull back if necessary. The draw string with cord lock allows you to adjust the bottom of the jacket to provide a secure and comfortable fit around your waist. It even comes complete with a pouch pocket for your hands or for storing items. Available in Olive Drab, sizes samll, medium, large, extra-large, and extra extra large.

Premium Bug Out Pants sell for $20.00
The relaxed fit design features an elastic waist band that comfortably fits under the jacket when the draw string is pulled and the cord lock is secured, adding another element of protection. The pants feature elastic ankle cuffs that fit securely around your boots. It comes in the above sizes.

The Jacket:

This unique design provides you with the ultimate in head and neck protection. Just slide your arms through the elastic straps, put the headnet on and you are ready to enjoy the outdoors in comfort. Its compact size makes it great for easy and carefree storage; and since it uses the same original no-see-um mesh with micro fibers you can relax in comfort knowing that Bug-Out is at work guarding you against biting and stinging insects! This is one of the best face masks available!

Size: One Size Fits All
Color: Olive Drab

Bug Out Outdoorwear helps guard against biting and stinging insects like no-see-ums, blackflies, mosquitoes, gnats, ticks - even the nymph stage of the deer tick. So whether you are digging in the garden, fishing at the lake, relaxing in the backyard or doing any other activity that requires you to be outdoors; Bug-Out Outdoorwear offers you ultimate in bug protection. Now you can fully enjoy your time outdoors without the use of potentially hazardous, dangerous, game spooking chemicals, sprays or repellents. The Bug Out System keeps biting and stinging insects out and lets air flow in. The relaxed fit design guarantees you will have time to enjoy the outdoors instead of the outdoors enjoying you.

Bug Out Outdoorwear uses a durable, lightweight see-through mesh that is 100% chemical free and is made of a chemical resistant material. This means if you want added protection you can apply deet or permanone to the material and it will not deteriorate the fabric, unlike some competitors' suits. Not only does the material help guard against biting, stinging, and crawling insects, it is proven to even help guard against the nymph stage of the deer tick, a most aggressive biter that causes Lyme Disease.

The Bug Out System has even passed the U.S. Military's extensive testing and approval process. It has been used in Somalia, Africa, Bosnia, Haiti and South America. Bug Out Outdoorwear is the preferred brand of insect protection. The patented design creates a total enclosure that protects you...but still allows for visibility and comfort.

FIRE SAFETY

ENVIRO-LOG Offers Safety Tips to Help You Avoid Outdoor Cooking Accidents

As the days grow longer and the weather warms, activities are moving outdoors, including cooking. To keep those meals from going up in smoke, or worse, Enviro-Log®, Inc., a leader in eco-friendly products for home heating and outdoor activities, offers safety tips to help you avoid outdoor cooking accidents.

Grilling has become more popular than ever. The number of barbecue grills and smokers shipped to North American stores increased 41 percent from 1992 to more than 14 million units in 2012, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association (HPBA). With an increasing number of people using grills, many of whom may be inexperienced, there’s a greater risk for accidents that can result in serious injury or property damage.

“Cooking outdoors has its risks, but they can be reduced by taking the right precautions and following safety procedures,” said Ross McRoy, president of Enviro-Log. “We urge people not to wait until after an accident has already happened to think about grilling safety. Please consider the following safety tips to help you avoid outdoor cooking accidents.”

Safety first. Never leave your grill or fire unattended and be sure to keep children and pets away from the fire and cooking area. Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergency.

Read the Manual.  Not all grills are the same. Always read instruction manuals and consult the manufacturer about the proper use of your grill, firepit, or chiminea before use.

Select the proper location. The National Fire Protection Administration (NFPA) said grills are the cause of 3,600 structure fires every year. Grills, fire pits, and chimineas should only be used outdoors and never in a trailer, tent, house, garage, covered porch or any enclosed area. They should be positioned at least 10 feet away from your house. In addition to creating a fire hazard, operating a grill, firepit or chiminea in an enclosed area can lead to the accumulation of carbon monoxide.

Stay out of the wind. Never operate your grill, firepit or chiminea in high winds. High winds can significantly increase the risk of flames spreading to nearby structures including your home.

Charcoal grills.  Never add lighter fluid or any other flammable liquids to a charcoal grill that has been lit. Doing so can result in flare ups that can travel several feet. Consider alternative firestarter products that offer a preselected start that can easily be extinguished. Always let your charcoal cool completely before moving your grill or leaving it unattended. When you are finished grilling, douse the coals or soak them in water before disposing them in a metal container.

Propane and natural gas grills.  The NFPA reported that five out of every six grill fires involve gas grills. To reduce the risk, always check for gas leaks every time you disconnect and reconnect the regulator to your propane tank. Never attach or disconnect a propane tank, or move or alter gas fittings when the grill is in operation or is hot. Never use a propane tank if it contains bulges, dents, gouges, corrosion, rust or other forms of visual external damage. Clean and perform general maintenance on your propane or natural gas grill twice a year. Always turn off the gas at the source (tank or supply line) prior to inspecting parts. Visually inspect hoses for abrasion, wear and leaks before each use. When lighting a gas grill, always keep the lid open to prevent a flash-off from gas build-up. Almost a third of gas grill injuries happen when the grill is being lit, according to the NFPA. Do not lean over the grill when igniting the burners or cooking. If the gas grill does not ignite on the first try, HPBA advises waiting five minutes for the gas to clear before trying again.

Campfires.  The U.S. Forest Service recommends using existing firepits and fire rings at campsites. Always follow your campsite fire guidelines. Never build a fire in hazardous, windy, or dry conditions, and keep campfires at least 15 feet away from tents, shrubs, trees (and low-hanging branches) and other flammable objects. Have a bucket of water and shovel nearby. Never cut branches from live trees, and only use material that is approved for use by your campsite. When finished with a campfire, be sure it is fully extinguished before abandoning it. Dousing it with water is preferred, but dirt and sand can also be used to mix up the embers until they are cooled.

GAMES

RingStix (System-Enterprises)

Looking for a game that all ages can play -- from agefs 6-96 -- and enjoy - that will get you outdoors - especially when you're camping or sitting on your lawn outdoors and want something to do?? Then pick up one of the latest creative games -- RingStix! I played it with my grandchildren and adults passing by asked if they could also play. The next question was "Where can I buy it?"

Not only a fun game, it's a sure, pleasurable way to get exercise. It can be played in:

- the water
- it floats,
- in strong winds - it's steady,
- therefore every time you feel like having fun
   you can go and play.

It's easy to learn, it takes you about 2 to 5 minutes and you can play.
You can shoot the ring up to 30 yards and you can build some tricks into the game. Recommended age: 6 - 96 years young.

How to Play: RingStix is played by 2 players passing the ring back and forth using two sticks per player. To launch the ring place both sticks through the ring. Next, pull the sticks quickly apart causing the ring to be launched. The ring begins to spin (stabilizing it's flight).

Play RingStix with multiple players, play it in a park, backyard, at the beach, etc. Play RingStix even solo by shooting the ring up in the air and catching it!

Available at toy stores or on-line. For more information check web site www.RingStix.com.

Rollors (Maranda Enterprises)

I'm always looking for new, outdoor games to entertain my family and came upon a new game - Rollors - that combines the action of Bocce, Bowling & Horseshoes -- combined into an entirely new game that's lots of fun for everyone in the family -- even two-year old kids.

I tested this safe play game outdoors on grass, and can't wait until we try it in the sand. It consists of one red goal and one blue goal, 3 red rollors, 3 blue rollors, one measuring cord and fits into a sturdy carry bag with instructions. My husband and I played with our 15 year-old granddaughter and 9 year-old grandson, taking turns and loving every minute 'rolling' - not throwing - disks at the goal. Instructions were easy to understand, as is the game, and points are awarded to the player/team that positions their disks closest to the goal. As the manufacturer says, "It's a great game of skill with the element of chance:" The handy carry bag can be brought anywhere, and the game is set up in seconds on grass or in the sand.

Rollors is recommended by Dr. Toy, and received the Seal of Excellence from Creative Child Magzine.

Available at stores, amazon.com and others. For more information, contact Maranda Enterprises in Mequon WI 53092, 877-287-8782 or go to web site www.marandaenterprises.com.

The Pocket Disc - A diversion for all ages

What is a pocket disc? Something that all ages and dog lovers are talking about. Why? The Pocket Disc, made from 100% cotton, is a colorful flying disk -- the first true indoor/outdoor disc for everyone. It's safe, portabie, and versatile. Actually, this disc began as a homework assignment in Savanna Groft's third grade class who crochet a round placemat. Afterward, it sat on an end table for over a year and a half until the father of one of Groft's friends stopped by for a vist and casually tossed it across the room at Groft's dad. As it floated across the room, her dad - Patrick Groft - had a eureka moment and the Pocket disc was born. The two men soon launched the company they now co-own, Phd Productions, and began exploring ways to bring this new 'toy' to the mass market. Finally they found gorups of Mayan women in Guatemala to produce the Pocket Discs - and today the money they make crocheting the discs enables over 200 Guatemalan weavers to support and send their children to school.

Today there are a variety of games and uses for the disc, including Indoor Disc Golf, William Tell, Pocket Disc Hockey, Ceiling Fan 500 and Skitzlejinx. The rules to these games and others can be found on the Phd Productions web site at www.pocketdisc.com/games.php.

Available on the Phd Productions web site and at a variety of retailers nationwide, including Dunham's Sports, and over 00 specialty toy, gift and outdoor retailers. Available in a variety of colors and designs, the Cassic Edition retails for $9.99, and the heavier weight Sports Edition for $14.99. For more information visit www.pocketdisc.com.

New for 2007, Ben’s® 30 Wipes offer outdoor enthusiasts the same effective alcohol-free 30% DEET-based formula, but in a delivery system that affords greater application control and convenience.

“Windy conditions often accompany our best days in the outdoors, which can make it hard to apply repellent using conventional methods without over spraying occurring,” says Tender Corp.’s marketing director, Jen Cusick.Cusick continued, “Since you can apply the repellent on the Ben’s® Wipes directly to the skin or clothing, neither wind nor rain can disrupt you from fully administering the product and protecting yourself.”

Along with greater control, Ben’s® 30 Tick and Insect Wipes also provide greater convenience. Available in a 12 pc box (MSRP$4.99) and 3 pc clamshell package (MSRP$1.99), Ben’s® Wipes can be easily stowed in your pocket or day pack, when you need to travel light.

Made by Tender Corporation (the makers of After Bite®), Ben’s® 30 Tick and Insect Repellent is comprised of a water-based solution containing 30% of the active ingredient DEET. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recognizes repellents containing DEET as providing consumers with the most effective protection against bites from mosquitoes, including those infected with West Nile Virus (WNV), and from ticks, which are responsible for the spread of Lyme Disease.

Unlike most DEET repellents, which contain alcohol, Ben’s® 30 is a water-based solution -- a significant difference for outdoor enthusiasts for several key reasons. By its nature, alcohol causes the pores of the skin to open, which means that more repellent gets absorbed into the body and there’s less repellent available on your skin to work against the bugs. Plus, alcohol evaporates at a faster rate than water, and when it does DEET goes along for the ride. Therefore, an alcohol-based repellent does not last as long as a water-based one. As such, with Ben’s® 30 outdoor enthusiasts are getting more repellent for their money. Water-based repellents are also safer; since it contains no alcohol, Ben’s® 30 is less likely to catch alight. Lastly, whereas alcohol creates a strong aroma -- that traditional “insect repellent” smell -- Ben’s® 30’s water-based formula offers a milder and much more pleasant scent.

With West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and other dangerous insect-borne diseases a growing concern during warmer weather months, outdoor enthusiasts need a repellent that they can trust will provide effective protection and Ben’s® 30 more than fits the bill. Ben’s® 30 with DEET offers up to eight hours of protection per application and, best of all, it’s also safe to apply to children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, repellents containing a DEET concentration level of 30%, such as Ben’s® 30, are safe to apply to children over two months.

For a stronger level of DEET protection, Tender also offers Ben’s® 100 Max Formula, which keeps you protected for up to 12 hours with just one application. Containing 98% DEET, Ben’s 100 is ideal for hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts who are traveling in heavily bug-infested areas within North America or around the globe. (For additional advice on avoiding mosquito bites this summer, see “Tender’s Top Five Tips for Enjoying the Outdoors” document.) In addition to the Wipes, Ben’s® 30 comes in a variety of other sizes, including a large 6 oz. Eco-Spray can (MSRP$7.99); a 4 oz. pump (MSRP$5.99) for smaller storage areas such as backpacks, hunting compartments and tackle boxes; and a 1.25 oz bottle (MSRP$3.60), which can be stored conveniently in a pocket or glove box for quick retrieval. The 1.25 oz pump and 4 oz are also available together as a Home & Field pack (MSRP$7.99), allowing you the flexibility to keep the 4 oz for backyard use and refill the 1.25 oz as needed for other outdoor excursions.

Benefits of this product according to the manufacturer:

·      Water-based solution allows less absorption of DEET

·      Less Absorption means higher efficacy - water & Based formulas last longer

·      Water-based DEET formulas are less flammable than alcohol based formulas

Water-based products are safer for the environment; they contain no VCS's (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Don't Bite Me

Don’t Let Bugs Take a Bite Out of You!

Bug bites are often seen as a necessary evil of outdoor activity. They're annoying, causing itchiness, swelling and redness to the skin. But statistics show that they can also be extremely dangerous -- leading to West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, Lyme disease and even Malaria. Last year there were over 3,500 cases of West Nile Virus, resulting in 121 deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control. With the warmer, high-risk months fast approaching, individuals and families can rely on the innovative Don’t Bite Me! patch to help protect themselves against the annoying and potentially life threatening effects of bug bites.

The Don’t Bite Me! all-natural insect repellent patch offers a first of its kind solution. Available nationally, the discreet, all-natural transdermal skin patch delivers a blend of protective Vitamin B1 and aloe combination throughout the body, protecting individuals against bites from pesky, disease-carrying mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, chiggers, sand fleas and no seeums for up to 36 hours.

Vitamin B1 is the key effective ingredient in Don’t Bite Me! Patch, and when applied to the skin, provides protection from biting insects.  The thiamine-based formula is absorbed into the bloodstream through the transdermal delivery of the Don’t Bite Me! Patch. Excess B1 is then secreted through the body’s pores, creating an odor that is almost undetectable to humans, but offensive to mosquitoes.  This odor forms a protective barrier around the body that shields the user from mosquitoes and other biting insects. Aloe, the other active ingredient, accelerates the absorption of the B1 and serves as an anti-inflammatory, and in the event of a rare bite — it helps reduce the reaction, particularly for those who are sensitive to mosquito bites.

Don’t Bite Me! Patch offers the following positive attributes as compared to messy sprays, lotions or towelettes:

No DEET, safe for children and adults alike
Easy, no mess application– just apply a patch to your skin
Protects skin often missed with a spray, such as ears and scalp
Waterproof, no need to re-apply after swimming or exercise
Protects up to 36 hours
Patent pending, all-natural formula
Incredibly effective

The Don’t Bite Me! Patch is available at natural food stores and major retailers nationwide including Kroger, Rite Aid, and select Walgreen’s and Wal-Mart stores nationwide. The product comes in a five-pack for a suggested retail price of $4.99 and a 10 pack for a suggested retail price of $7.99. For more information on where to buy, visit www.dontbitemepatch.com

Don't Bug Me

Don’t Bug Me! Skin Patch Provides Effective All-Natural Insect Repellent and Protection for Up To 36 hours; DEET-free and Safe for Children

Don’t let mosquitoes or other pesky bugs take a bite out of you this summer.  While bug bites are often seen as a necessary evil of outdoor activity, statistics show that these bites can also be dangerous – leading to increased incidence of West Nile, Encephalitis and Lyme disease and even illnesses such as Malaria acquired through international travel.  And then there’s the annoying itching, swelling and redness that also occur when a nasty bug takes a bite out of your skin.

Just in time for summer, the Don’t Bug Me! insect repellent patch offers a first of its kind solution -- a transdermal skin patch that delivers a combination of protective Vitamin B1 and aloe combination throughout the body. One patch protects against bites from pesky, disease-carrying mosquitoes, gnats, ticks, chiggers, sand fleas and no seeums for up to 36 hours.

Concerns about increased prevalence of West Nile, Encephalitis and Lyme disease in the United States and also exposure to Malaria and other diseases have helped fuel sales of insect repellent, up over 30 percent since 2001. The potential of disease, coupled with concerns about the possible side effects of DEET, have led a growing number of consumers, particularly parents, searching for insect repellents that work but have low or no toxicity.  This summer, the Don’t Bug Me! Patch may provide the answer.

Vitamin B1 is the key effective ingredient in Don’t Bug Me! Patch, and when applied to the skin, provides protection from biting insects.  The thiamine-based formula is absorbed into the bloodstream through the transdermal delivery of the Don’t Bug Me!

Don’t Bug Me! Patch offers the following positive attributes as compared to messy sprays, lotions or towelettes:

Early testing with select Boy Scout groups, members of the U.S. Army and professionals who spend their days working outside in bug-infested areas has brought in rave reviews about the effectiveness of Don’t Bug Me! Patch More specifically:

·       EODT, a security company for the U.S. government while helping to rebuild Iraq used the patches and re-ordered when they realized the patch works against sand fleas, a larger problem than mosquitoes in Iraq.

·       More than 30 soldiers in the U.S. Army tried the product while in the deep woods near the Arkansas river and found they were effective during their three-week stay in the chigger infested woods.  They reported NO bites from mosquito, chiggers, or ticks.

The Don’t Bug Me! Patch received the Most Innovative Product Award at the Natural Products Expo East Show in October 2006.  At the same show, Supermarket Guru, Phil Lempert of The Today Show and Jeff Nibbler from SPINS highlighted the product’s “wonderful innovation.”

The Don’t Bug Me! Patch is available at natural food stores and major retailers nationwide.  The product comes in a five-pack for a suggested retail price of $4.99 and a 10 pack for a suggested retail price of $7.99.

DAVIS INSTRUMENTS

Versatile Mega-Lights Consume Little Power

Dependable light goes a long way to ensure safety, security and comfort onboard or outdoors. Because of limited battery capacity on vessels and RVs, minimal power draw is a must to keep a light shining. Requiring a miniscule 0.11 amp, Mega-Lights from Davis Instruments can run 12 hours on one amp-hour of 12V power.
Also capable of operating continuously for more than 700 hours on a 12V, 80 amp-hour battery, three Mega-Light models offer multiple features and functions. All feature a bulb that draws just 0.11 amp, roughly 1/10 of an amp, that's visible for two miles when used as an anchor light. Also included is a easily interchangeable, brighter bulb for reading or use as a cockpit or interior light. It draws a mere 0.32 amp, or 1/3 amp.

Convenient and versatile, Mega-Lights are great for marking boats, reading and close-work, inspecting an engine, fishing at night or preparing a campfire meal. The waterproof, dual-function Fresnel lens projects light visible up to two nautical miles. When hung upside-down, the clear 1:1 lens provides area lighting to illuminate decks, cockpits and campgrounds.

A built-in light sensor on the Mega-Light Utility and Masthead models automatically turns the light on at dusk and off at dawn to provide security while owners are away. Unlike inexpensive yard lights, Mega-Lights are completely sealed and won't corrode in saltwater air. Their incandescent bulbs also react more quickly to sensors than LEDs as twilight descends.

The Mega-Light Utility features a new energy-efficient circuit board. It comes with 15' of heavy-duty cord and plugs into a 12V lighter socket. The featherweight light hangs from an adjustable, triangular bracket. Easily installed on a masthead, interior wall, cockpit or bulkhead, Mega-Light Masthead comes fastened to an L-shaped stainless steel bracket. A 12" pigtail simplifies wiring directly into the power source. Along with the two incandescent bulbs, Mega-Light Ultimate Cockpit Light features a red and yellow LED controlled by a waterproof push button. Six modes include steady white, red or yellow as well as blinking and alternating flashing red and yellow. Myriad uses include vessel identification, reading charts at night or creating ambience while entertaining aboard. It comes with 15' of heavy-duty cord, a 12V socket plug-in and sturdy hanger. The LEDs are guaranteed for more than 100,000 hours.

A spare Mega-Light works well in the car for emergencies or for loading and unloading at night. These powerful little lights are perfect stocking-stuffers or for giving on any occasion.

Suggested retail pricing for the Davis Instruments Mega-Light starts at $49.99.

Larson Electronics’ Magnalight has announced the release of an LED work light equipped with a 20 inch long bendable goose-neck and double ball joint magnetic mounting system. Designed to provide extreme adjustability for applications where getting a light placed exactly where it is needed is difficult, the LED6W-GNM high output LED light emitter can be attached to any ferrous metallic surface and set to an almost infinite range of positions. Producing as much light as a 50 watt halogen lamp, this high output LED light provides  a high quality flood of clean white light and is ideal for work and temporary lighting applications where the precise mounting and positioning a light important.

The LED6W-GNM LED High Output LED Light Emitter on Double Ball Joint with Magnetic Base from Larson Electronics’ Magnalight provides operators with an extremely adjustable lighting solution that offers the high quality illumination of LEDs coupled with the versatility of a magnetic mounting system. The Advanced Focus System (AFS) is the patented combination of a reflector AND lens to create a light system that provides both a focused beam for long-distance and a homogenous spill-beam for up-close reading. AFS means whether you’re reading a map up close or focusing down the path to a landmark in the distance, your light will be easy on the eyes, clear and bright.

PAKLITE

Amazing New Light -- Paklite

Do you know of a light source that---

·      does not require any kind of fuel?

·      has no mechanical parts?

·      can be rolled, folded or submerged in water or frozen?

·      can light-up a 5 man tent, yet weigh less than 4 ounces?

·      will last forever?

I found there is such a light, and it's called the Paqlite. The product was first targeted to the hunting and camping markets and has been tested as the Uncle Vernon Paqlite™ by the Hunting & Fishing Clubs of America operated by the North America Media Group (Minneapolis, MN during the 1st quarter of 2011 ---- and most importantly the product has now received both clubs’ Seals of Approval as a product that meets its expectations and is a good value for the consumer.

“This “Amazing New Light” was then recently introduced to the emergency preparedness market at the 2011 Super Emergency Preparedness Show (Utah Valley University-Orem, Utah).  The response was truly amazing . . . ,” states Steve Nagel founder and President of 4EverLight International, Inc. a Montrose, Colorado based company.  “Many attendees purchased on Friday and then came back and purchased more on Saturday---needless to say we ran out of product by Saturday evening and shipped back-orders the following week.”

“Creating a renewable energy based light is quite a break through as the material has been used for many years in various applications such as watch lighting to toy glow Frisbees®, but never taken to function as truly a new light source,” states Nagel. The product is not a light bulb or a flashlight, but provides light at no cost for users to use in their surroundings or markers in dark situations.  The unique packaging allows you to roll it up, fold it, or place it flat in a backpack, tent or sleeping bag for anyone that is camping, enjoying the outdoors, or making preparations for future emergencies. Just great for other spaces that need light—even a night light for kids.  The newest form is in a tube (Uncle Vernon’s Tooblite™) to provide a new type of light stick that you never dispose of and is also great for kids as a play in the dark light.

You can checkout the Company’s website www.uvpaqlite.com and see the product in video.

MAPS

MYTOPO.COM Releases A New Product -- A navigation-Ready TopophotoTM Map

Landowners and outdoor enthusiasts who have for years relied on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map series now have a new option. MyTopo.com, an innovator in the mapping industry, has created a TopoPhotoTM map, which combines information from the reliable USGS topographic map with a recent color aerial photograph, creating a navigation-ready hybrid map.

"The TopophotoTM maps take the best available topographic data and aerial photographs and combines them to create a more updated map, which we think will replace or at least be a useful supplement to the aging USGS topo maps we have relied upon for years," said Toohill. The maps are available now to order via the company’s online ordering system, and, like the company’s other maps, can be centered any place in the US, printed on large sheets of waterproof or glossy paper, personalized with a name and title, and shipped to the customer’s doorstep within 24-48 hours.

The maps provide the ability to see the elevation contours, roads, buildings, and geographic features labeled on a color aerial photograph taken in 2003-2006. "The TopoPhotoTM maps reveal recent changes on the landscape, including vegetation and development, but they maintain the traditional reliability of the USGS topographic maps," added Toohill.

MyTopo.com specializes in providing an easy and convenient process for outdoor enthusiasts to order large-format printed maps, including topo maps, aerial photos, and the new TopophotoTM maps. Customers use a five step process to customize their maps online; the maps are printed and shipped within 24-48 hours. The ordering process allows the customer to center their map any place in the US, chose the map’s scale, provide a title, and personalize further with the map owner’s name. The maps can be printed in several size choices and on waterproof, glossy or laminated paper. They range in price from $9.95 to $59.95, depending on map type and paper size.

The new TopophotoTM maps are available in more than 25 states, with the remaining states becoming available over the next several months. Current customers can reorder previously ordered topo or aerial photo maps in the TopophotoTM format by logging into their accounts and selecting the option to "start a new map here." The TopophotoTM maps are available in all three sizes and paper types and start at $29.95.

MyTopo.com is a private company based in Billings, MT. The company sells maps directly via web site www.mytopo.com, and also resells its maps via many popular websites including Topozone.com, MapTech.com, Cabelas.com, Remington.com, Realtree.com, the Digital Map Store and many more mapping and outdoor-related sites.

Air-Dryer Protects Valuables From Rust, Mold & Mildew

Moisture is insidious. Even trace amounts can cause rust, mold and mildew to set in. The result can be anything from a blemish to the complete loss of an item. Air-Dryr from Davis Instruments is an effective and inexpensive way to stave off damaging humidity.
Air-Dryr is engineered to operate 24/7. Plugged into a 110/120V outlet and placed as low as possible, it warms the damp air to above the dew point. As the dry air is released through the top vents, cool, dank air is drawn into the device and processed. For safety, a thermal cutoff turns off the device in the event that something falls on top of it and blocks the air flow.

Without any moving parts, Air-Dryr is completely silent. Its durable polycarbonate housing is built to withstand years of use. UL Listed, it's completely safe to handle when plugged in.
Two sizes are offered. Air-Dryr 500 has a 70 watt heating element and handles up to 500 cu. ft., yet draws only 0.6 amps. It measures 14" L x 5" W x 4.5" H.

With a 130 watt heating element, Air-Dryr 1000 takes care of up to 1,000 cu. ft. of space. Drawing only 1.1 amps, it is 13.5" dia. x 4.25" H. Air-Dryr is perfect for boats, RVs and other vehicles, vaults and storage units. Air-Dryr 500 costs $59.99; Air-Dryr 1000 is $69.99.

Air Vents Need Not Be Eye Sores

Until now, airflow vents have often detracted from the stylish décor found in today's boats and RVs. Manufacturers' Select by ITC now offers attractive stainless steel vents to improve circulation anywhere on board, and add a stylish touch in the process.

Two sizes of the unobtrusive, easy-to-install vents measure 3" or 4" in diameter. Thanks to Manufacturers' Select patented friction fit, vents can be compressed into a 3.25" or 4.25" hole cutout, without the use of screws. The built-in hose attachment system eliminates the need for a hose clamp.

The vents are used by several boat and RV builders, in both forced-air and natural ventilation applications. The stainless steel clad is highly polished and corrosion-resistant. The vent body, in neutral gray plastic, becomes invisible after installation. The 3" model provides a net air flow of 4 sq. in. The 4" model's net air flow is 7 sq. in. ITC also supplies a selection of similar vents in both white and black plastic, using the same patented features.

Retail prices of the stainless steel vents from Manufacturers' Select by ITC are $15.50 for the 3" model, and $16.50 for the 4" version.

26 Paddling and Camping Tips for Families and New Parents from PaddlingLight

We’re now five years into the adventure of parenting. While it has slowed down the number of extended trips — I haven’t done a trip longer than 20 days since our kid was born — it hasn’t stopped us completely. Camping with our little one has gotten much easier as he has gotten older. This is especially true looking back at his first nine-day camping trip when he was six months old. Over the years, we’ve learned a few paddling and camping trips for families and new parents that made our trips much easier. I’ll share some that we’ve learned.

1. Trip prep and camp chores take twice as long when you add one two-year-old kid to the family. Account for this so you don’t feel overwhelmed. When paddling make your days shorter so you have more time in camp to complete the chores.
2. Before the trip pay attention to the number of diapers you use each day. This will give you a good idea how many you’ll need to pack for your paddling trip. Bring extra and bring plastic bags for the dirty diapers.
3. With diapers, your pack never gets lighter as you eat food, because there are full diapers to carry out.
4. You are on their time. Try to stick to their home schedule for naps, snacks and food.
5. Take care of yourself by eating well and staying hydrated. Without self-care, you can’t take care of your little one.
6. Bring food you know they’ll eat, especially for picky eaters. Make it exact. You don’t want a meltdown over mac & cheese, because they usually eat it with Parmesan cheese on top and you don’t have any with.
7. After a couple of days of pushing into the wilderness and hiking across portages take a day for them to play at camp.
8. Discipline like at home. If they aren’t behaving make them take a timeout.
9. Clothing: PJs work as long underwear on colder days. Rain pants work well as all-around pants.
10. Before the trip read books about canoeing and camping to them.
11. After the trip make a picture book about the trip to remind them it was fun.
12. Two- and three-year-old kids can’t carry anything on the portage. Don’t count on them to carry their toys in a small backpack or even their lifevest.
13. Expect lots of falls when portaging.
14. Don’t pack the pacifier or security items inside the bottom of a portage pack.
15. Giving them control of where they sit in the canoe can help them feel part of the trip.
16. Allow them to move around in the canoe. They can walk to mom or to dad during the paddling.
17. Give them a small and lightweight paddle to use.
18. Make sure that they get exactly the same gear as you use. They’ll want a cup, spoon and bowl that looks exactly the same as your cup, spoon and bowl. Let them select the color. This helps them feel included and gives them ownership over the trip.
19. Let them help with the camp chores.
20. Keep your nightly routine the same, bring books.
21. Have 2-3 familiar toys to play with in the tent for rest time or rainy days.
22. Walk around camp during the day so they are familiar with it.
23. Practice going to the bathroom outside before you go and show them where they can go so they are comfortable with going to the bathroom, if your child is potty trained.
24. Your child is excited, and over stimulated at the same time. They will have no clue how to handle this so talking to them and helping them to experience things will help them to be comfortable and have fun and make it easier on the parent.
25. Practice wearing a life vest before the trip. If they aren’t used to it, they aren’t going to like it. We use NRS kid’s vests.
26. Pick a low portage route, but a long enough route to feel like you did something. You have to reward yourself.

How Do Camping Trips Relieve Stress?

According to The American Institute of Stress, more than 60% of Americans claim that stress related to work is the most common source of unease in their lives. Thankfully, a camping trip can do wonders to reduce stress by allowing you to escape the pressure of schedules and deadlines by taking in some fresh air, enjoying a fun activity, or simply doing nothing at all. We invite you to ditch the therapy sessions and go camping at Catherine’s Landing.

Camping – and glamping – can renew your mind, body and soul at Catherine’s Landing!

Cold-Weather Camping Tips to Keep You Warm While You Sleep by Kristin Hostetter for Backpacker Magazine

There is nothing like the scent of pine amidst the quiet of an alpine lake or a clear sky speckled with stars against snow-capped mountains. But even the most spectacular sights won’t make up for a miserable night camping in cold weather or freezing temperatures. Whether you’re cross-country skiing or backpacking by snowshoe, don’t be ill-prepared. Get the gear you need to stay warm and endure those subzero winter extremes. Here’s how to make your adventure more about comfort and less about battling the cold.

Essential Cold-Weather Camping Gear Checklist

Closed-cell foam sleeping pad
Coupler strap (and a buddy)
Sleeping bag with an appropriate lower-limit temperature rating
Synthetic or wool base layers
Socks, gloves, and a technical cold-weather hat
Grooved wind-resistant tent stakes
Nutrient-dense snacks
Reusable straw
Tent brush
Urination device (FUD) for the ladies
Bottle insulator
Stainless steel water bottle

1. Always Check Weather Conditions and Hazards

Know before you go. This is the golden rule for any outdoor activity: check the conditions. Besides knowing the extreme temperatures you may be up against (think cold-weather desert fluctuations), stay on top of approaching weather systems and weather trends for the season and region, and research recent changes in terrain, trail closures, or similar hazards. Consider contacting the closest ranger station to stay current. Always establish a trip plan and inform appropriate parties of your whereabouts and anticipated return.

2. Secure Your Campsite and Flatten Your Sleeping Surface

Once you’ve secured a location that’s reasonably dry, flat, and protected from the elements, set up your tent. If conditions allow, clear away any snow to expose the dirt and flatten the site with your tools or boots. Climb into your tent, and use your knees to smooth out the ground area were you’ll be sleeping. "Don't wait until later to do this," says polar explorer and all-around cold expert Eric Larsen. "Once the snow melts and refreezes, it's hard to manipulate. I also create a shallow trough for myself so I don't roll around." This shaping technique helps to reduce ambient space and potential heat loss from cold exposure, which could make for a miserable night or subject an individual to the early stages of hypothermia or frostbite.

How Does Your Body Lose Heat?

Evaporation: Evaporation causes a cooling effect. The body loses 85% of its heat through sweating during intense exercise. Wet clothes from sweating and increased respiration also trigger a drop in body heat.
Radiation: Radiation causes heat to move away from the body. The body may lose more than 50% of its heat from radiation at temperatures lower than 68°F (20°C).
Conduction: Conduction is the transfer of heat from physical contact. Conduction occurs at 68°F (20°C) and is responsible for the loss of body heat from sleeping on the cold ground.
Convection: Convection occurs when a heated fluid (liquid or gas) travels away from a source. Take the example of a hot cup of tea. The rising steam coming off of the cup indicates the movement of heat as hot water transitions into gaseous water (wet steam).

3. Bring an Insulated, Closed-Cell Foam Sleeping Pad

Conduction is the culprit for the heat loss that occurs when sleeping on the cold ground, and even a “warm” cold-weather sleeping bag is a cold bag without a quality, insulated pad underneath it. Most self-inflating air mattresses only insulate down to about 30°F, so if you want yours for comfort, lay down a closed-cell foam pad (or CCF) first, like the Therm-a-Rest Ridgerest SOLite Solar (Figure A). This aluminized, coated pad is highly durable and has a lightweight build—we’re talking under 19 oz—and its R-3.5 rating (detailed below) is sure to keep you insulated. Simply throw your self-inflating mattress on top. Some backcountry experts even recommend layering the CCF pad on top of your air mattress.

Sleeping Pad Ratings: What Is an R-Value?

An R-value refers to to the ability of an insulated material to resist the conductive flow of heat. The higher the R-value rating, the more effective a sleeping pad is at thermal insulation. As always, field testing is the only tried-and-true method when it comes to backcountry gear. Factor in critical features such as a sleeping pad’s weight, compressibility, and comfort before making your purchase.

4. Insulate Your Tent by Reducing Ambient Space

Buddy Up: Put your partner's sleeping pad close to yours, or better yet, further reduce ambient space and connect your pads with the Big Agnes Sleeping Pad Coupler Strap (Figure B—$10).
Think Like a Pack Rat: Place your stuff sacks and extra gear around the tent's inside perimeter to further insulate.
DIY Radiant Barrier: Create a radiant barrier by duct-taping a space blanket (also commonly known as a Mylar blanket, emergency blanket, or shock blanket) onto your tent ceiling. They’re cheap and can be a lifesaver—literally. If you experience excessive condensation inside your tent in the mornings, however, give the space blanket tip a pass. Excess moisture is the doom of all camping gear.

Check out some additional basic winterizing tips for camping in the snow.

Does Body-to-Body Warming Work?

Yes, body-to-body warming is certainly effective for staying warm in cold-weather conditions and for preventing heat loss. Let’s take a lesson in thermodynamics: The greater the difference in temperature, the faster the rate of heat transfer. By decreasing the body’s area of exposure to cold air and increasing the surface area of exposure to warmth (a camping buddy), two individuals can decrease the rate at which they’ll lose body heat.

5. Warm Up With a Hot Water Bottle

If you put a hot, non-insulated stainless-steel water bottle in your sleeping bag at night, it will radiate heat like a sauna stone (Figure I). Try tucking your makeshift heater next to one of these critical areas: your core, your inner thigh (near your femoral artery), and your neck (near your jugular).

Not a fan of stainless steel? Opt for a BPA-free material. Unfortunately, harmful chemicals may leach into water when a material is heated, that’s why 100% stainless steel bottles are preferred. A word of caution: Not all metal water bottles are stainless steel, so check the tags. Look for #304 or 18/8 food-grade stainless steel.

6. Stash Your Boot Liners in Your Bag

With the possible exception of skipping your morning coffee, nothing hurts more than ramming your feet into frozen boots in the morning. Your body prioritizes warming your core, so keep your hands and feet warm to conserve energy. Invest in a synthetic blend or high-quality wool sock for moisture reduction and odor management. (Don’t forget the gloves!)

7. Don’t Breathe or Burrow Deep Into Your Bag

"Moisture from your breath will get trapped in the bag," says Larsen. "Instead, cinch the draft collar and close the hood down around your mouth and nose so you have a blowhole to breathe through" (Figure D). This is especially true if you use a down sleeping bag. Remember: Condensation is the death of a down bag. A wet bag significantly loses its insulation and takes time to dry, which is sure to put a damper on your adventure. Achieve maximum loft or fluffiness by shaking your bag upside down. This technique redirects the down back to the upper half of the bag near your core where heat retention is most critical.

8. Wear the Right Clothes for Sleeping in Cold Temperatures

Some people say that sleeping naked in a sleeping bag will keep you warmer. This is simply not true. For temperatures below 30°F, be sure to outfit yourself in appropriate base layers:

Avoid tight-fitting clothing (socks, underwear, gloves) that may restrict blood flow to your extremities.
Avoid running too warm (moisture will get trapped in your bag and will cause an overall drop in body temperature as you cool off).
Wear synthetic fabrics or wool.
Consider warm socks, fingered gloves, and a cozy cap.

If you run warm, you may want to use a vapor barrier to prevent your perspiration from reaching the down in your bag. If you are waking up to recurring condensation, ventilate your tent with a small opening. Hot or cold, whatever you do, dress for the occasion and leave your cotton clothing at home.

Why Is Cotton Clothing Bad for Camping? Backcountry experts say that cotton kills, but why?

Cotton clothing does not wick moisture, may drop your body temperature, and serves as a medium for bacteria.

Moisture-wicking materials such as merino wool, polyester, and polypropylene are designed to redistribute moisture via capillary action, whereas cotton becomes easily saturated much like a sponge. To stay warm, avoid silk and cellulose fibers like cotton, layer strategically, and opt for synthetic fabrics. cold weather camping windy conditions

9. How to Manage Tent Camping on High-Wind Nights

High winds? Sleep in shifts. "Someone will have to check the tent's rigging every few hours," explains cold-weather expert, Finnegan. "If you wait too long to tighten a line [because you don't want to leave your warm bag], the damage to the structure will be impossible to control." Think about it: The less surface area gusty, cold air and wind have to push against your rigging, the better. Opt for a tent with a maximum wind rating if you like to adventure in terrain with unpredictable wind.

If the wind direction is steady, work with it: Direct the narrowest face of your tent into the wind to decrease exposed surface area.

Consider bringing grooved, wind-resistant stakes if gusts are a real concern. If a tent loses functionality, it can be a huge financial loss and put your safety on the line.

10. Munch on a High-Calorie Midnight Snack

"If I wake up cold in the middle of the night, I wolf down Strawberry Clif Shot Bloks ($2 for six) to fuel my engine," Larsen says. Your body runs on fuel, so fuel it up. Go for sugars, fats, and carbohydrates. The closer you can eat to bed time, the better, especially if your meal is rich in fat. Your body metabolizes protein before fat and takes longer to metabolize fat than carbohydrates, so opt for calorie-dense foods like chocolate (Item E), cheese, and nuts. A warm meal requiring minimal prep right before bed will give your body an added boost.

11. Prevent Spills on Your Dry Gear—Try a Reusable Straw

Nothing would be more frustrating than spilling liquid on your dry gear (second to dehydration). Hydration is a must, so keep a reusable straw near your water bottle for no-mess drinking in the middle of the night (Item F). Opt for a material that is highly durable and easy to disinfect, such as stainless steel. Some backpackers even use straws to transport spices for their cooking needs. Simply load the straw with a desired spice, seal up the ends, and voila! You’ll be cooking gourmet meals in no time. (Note: Make sure your cayenne pepper is out of the straw before trying to drink out of it.)

12. Remove Morning Frost From Your Tent

Water vapor often condenses on a tent's inner wall even with the door cracked. Once the ice melts, it will soak your gear. Control frost by keeping your gear covered or inside garbage bags and sweep (with a tent brush) ice crystals into collectable piles before they melt. Remember to dry out your gear daily if conditions permit. If you’re hanging out for the day, invert your tent and let any sunshine or dry wind remove outstanding moisture.

13. Don't Hold Your Pee in at Night

If nature calls in the middle of the night, don't procrastinate; this makes you colder in the long run because your body has to burn calories to keep urine warm. Too cold to drop trou? Guys should consider using a designated pee bottle (Item G) (mark it with tape or some other distinguishable feature).

For ladies, modern relief gear can make going in the cold a less chilly proposition; check out our review of the best pee funnels for women. Feeling thrifty? Make use of a wide-mouthed jar. Pro tip: Try practicing your technique in the shower so that you can have a few practice runs before showtime.

Harsh times call for harsh measures, and your warm pee jar (and lost body) heat can be used for passive warming—just make sure to tighten the lid and check for leaks. Jars can also be emptied and repurposed to pack out waste or feminine hygiene products.

14. Insulate Your Water Bottles

In high altitude and in extreme weather, you’re at a greater risk of dehydration. Frozen water not only drops body temperature but makes rehydration difficult. "I use Granite Gear's Air Coolers (Item H) to keep my water from freezing at night," says Larsen (one-liter size, $22). These insulators reflect 95% of radiant heat and will insulate hot drinks and soup. Keep your core body temperature up and stay hydrated by sipping on something warm.

15. Protect Your Electronics From the Cold

Cold weather can drain battery power fast, or even worse, permanently damage electronics. Stow your electronics, batteries, fuel canisters, and anything else you don't want to freeze in the foot of your sleeping bag (Figure C) (buy a sleeping bag with a little extra length for this purpose). Your electronics have maximum and minimum storage and operating temperatures, so it's wise to check these out before heading into the wilderness. Operating or charging an electronic device outside of its specified temperature range can cause irreparable damage.
cold weather camping frostbite

You’re all amped to get out and go, but there’s something else to cover before you hit the snowy wastes: safety. As every backcountry expert knows, no one is immune to cold. It’s important to not only equip yourself with necessary gear for your mission, but to equip yourself with the necessary knowledge for your safety and survival.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Moderate to Severe Hypothermia?

You’re extreme and you expect to be cold, but when is cold too cold? Our bodies regulate best at 98.6 ºF (or 37 ºC), so hypothermia is a real risk when our core temperature drops below a safe level. Here are the signs and symptoms of moderate to severe hypothermia:

Shivering that eventually ceases as condition worsens
Poor and worsening coordination
Slurred speech
Confusion and impaired cognition
A thready or weak pulse
Drowsiness and lethargy
Bradypnea or slowed breathing
Shallow breathing
Apathy

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Frostbite?

Frostbite commonly affects the fingers, toes, ears, nose, chin, and cheeks. Exposed skin in extreme wind or cold is most susceptible to frostbite, although unexposed skin may also be susceptible.

The Early Stage of Frostbite: The first stage of frostbite, known as frostnip, is reversible and will not cause severe damage to tissue. This stage is characterized by paleness, mild tingling, and numbness of the affected areas.
The Intermediate Stage of Frostbite: The second stage of frostbite is called superficial frostbite, during which skin remains soft but mild damage has occurred. Skin discoloration may be visible, and water blisters may appear after rewarming in the first 24-48 hours.
The Advanced Stage of Frostbite: Severe frostbite is a medical emergency and is characterized by hardened, cold skin, the loss of sensation, permanent nerve damage, and cell death. Affected skin may be blue or black. Severe cases may require the amputation of affected areas.

First Aid Treatment for Frostbite

Inspire Tech Savvy Children to Love the Great Outdoors

Camping & Education Foundation guides parents on unplugging and reconnecting

Parents remember childhood as a time when they ran around outside making up games with friends. Passing a love of the great outdoors on to your kids can be difficult to do when it seems like you are always busy. Today’s generation of children are more likely to be found sitting with their faces glued to a laptop, tablet or phone screen than running around outside. While these devices can be necessary for getting homework done and supplementing classroom learning with extra tutoring, a study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior found that sixth-graders who went five days without exposure to technology were significantly better at reading human emotions than kids who had regular access to phones, televisions and computers. Other research suggests that screen time can have lots of negative effects on kids, ranging from childhood obesity and irregular sleep patterns to social and/or behavioral issues. For parents who care deeply about the natural world, it can be challenging to pass this love on to their children.

The Camping & Education Foundation has developed programming at its summer camps that unplugs kids, freeing them from email, social media and gaming for the summer to jumpstart the kid’s starved development of independence, self-worth and other life skills. Parents can mimic this same experience at home and enhance children’s love for the natural world by following these simple tips:

·       Get children outside as much as possible: When out and about with your kids, try to get them out in nature as much as possible. This may include doing the following: sitting outside at restaurants, with weather permitting you can walk to destinations, or plan family hikes at nearby hiking trails.

·       Point out the beauty of nature: When you are outside with your children, point out all the great things that can be found in nature. By showing kids things such as weird plants or cool looking birds, parents are engaging their kids learning of the natural world.

·       Books on the great outdoors: It is important for children to be reading. Try incorporating books about the outdoors or try reading books that have a diverse or interesting setting in nature.

·       Kick them out of the house: Kids today often want to play indoors (where the electronics are); they say there’s “nothing to do outside.” Insist that they play outside—but also, give them the freedom to roam around within boundaries appropriate for their ages, so they can explore and stretch their imagination.

·       Get help from an expert.  At a certain age parents just are not cool anymore. Rather than trying to explain the perks of nature to a child who just finds you boring, take a trip and enlist the help of an expert at a local state or national park, arboretum or zoo. Give your child the opportunity to learn about the uniqueness and weirdness of nature from a park ranger or zoologist who can inspire their curiosity.

·       Discover their interests. By asking your child and finding out what activities they may be interested in, you can appeal to their interests and give them a say in how they spend their time outside. For example, if your child enjoys climbing or biking, encourage these activities and help cater to their general interest.

·       Make an appointment with Mother Nature. Soccer and gymnastics practice, mom’s night out, school festivals and friend’s birthday parties all make it on the family calendar, why not make a date with Mother Nature as well? If you make the effort to block out time in your family’s busy schedule to spend time outdoors, you will be more likely to follow through on your goal. Be sure to leave all tech gadgets in the car or at home.

·       Plan a nature craft. Send the kids outside to collect pieces of nature that can be used in a craft. This could be leaves, pinecones, twigs, nuts, seashells or pebbles. Have them use the found treasures for a craft like building a “log cabin” bird house, decorating a picture frame or have them dip the items in paint and use them as stamps on paper to create one-of-a-kind artwork.

·       Create a scavenger hunt. Have your kids invite friends over to play and organize a nature-inspired scavenger hunt. Set parameters on where the kids can go to find the items on their list. Then, break them into teams and send them out to race to complete their lists first.

·       Organize a kid-friendly extreme nature race. Gather your kids and some of their friends and head to a park for a team-based competition. Set up stations where each child must complete a task to help the team finish the challenge and move on to the next one. For example, one challenge could be Twig Soccer. One team member has to pump air into a deflated soccer ball. Once that is accomplished, the second team member must dribble the ball with his or her hands to a nearby tree where the third team member is waiting with a stick that he or she must use to hit the ball to the finish line.

·       Plan your summers with outdoors opportunities: Whether you plan a family trip to Yosemite or enroll your child in a summer camp that focuses on the natural world, just plan to get them outside. Although your kids might fight you and declare their love for the new and popular theme park, show them that exploring and learning about the world is an adventure.

·       Plan a weekend camping trip. Spending a few days and nights in the outdoors can actually be simple to plan, even if your family isn’t an outdoorsy bunch. Retailers like REI rent camping equipment and if you don’t want to sleep on the ground, renting an RV costs about as much as a hotel stay. Remember to keep things simple your first time out. Try packing sandwiches or a meal that can be eaten cold like pasta salad and tackle cooking on a future trip.

Fire Safety Tips

SellMyRVToday.com Offers Valuable Motorhome Safety Tips

SellMyRVToday.com, the number one RV purchaser and consignment RV sales in the nation, has developed a list of safety tips for those planning their summer vacations in a recreational vehicle. While there is no better way to travel than in an RV, the fun can be spoiled in the blink of an eye if certain safety precautions are not taken.

Remember to Buckle Up: There is a lot of wandering room in a motorhome. Nevertheless, all passengers are required to wear seatbelts while the coach is in motion. Even though RV travel is extremely comfortable, it is important to remember that they are still moving vehicles, subject to accidents. Wearing a seatbelt may make the difference between walking away from a crash or being hauled away in an ambulance. If your motorhome is semi-modern, it will most likely be equipped with seatbelts. If not, they can be installed at many RV dealer shops or service facilities.

Refrain From Leaving Valuables In Your Motorhome: While traveling, it is sometimes easy to think that you are exempt from being victimized by malicious acts because you are relaxed, on vacation. It is actually a fact that tourists are one of the most sought out targets for thieves, as they know that travelers tend to let their guard down. If you have anything of value or import, be sure to take it with you when you park your RV. No matter what the design is of your motorhome, thieves are capable of breaking and entering. Also, be sure to lock and secure your motorhome while sleeping during the night. It is just an extra step to protect you and your family.

Exercise Fire Safety: If you choose to smoke in your motorhome, remember to use ashtrays. Never leave a lit cigarette on a table or flat surface where it could roll onto furniture. Never fall asleep with a cigarette still burning. Needless to say, if you are going to smoke, it is always much wiser to do so outside of the coach to avoid any possibility of fire hazards. Also, if you build a campfire next to the motorhome, it is a good idea to keep doors and windows closed so that burning embers cannot drift into the coach and cause a fire. When cooking in the coach, be sure that all burners are turned off before leaving the kitchen, and be sure not to get distracted while food is cooking.

Crossing Borders: Remember that if you are entering or exiting either Mexico or Canada, see to it that all laws are being obeyed, and that there are no illegal substances on board. As a guest of other countries, you and your vehicle are subject to search as you enter. These border crossings exercise “Zero Tolerance” policies. If any illegal drugs are discovered in the motorhome, you can be criminally charged and the coach, along with all assets in the vehicle, can be seized.

Swing Clearance: Always be aware of the overhang past the rear wheels. You should know how much distance is required to clear this overhang and not strike anything as your turn.

Backing Up: No matter how skilled or experienced the driver of a motorhome is, it’s always a good safety practice to have someone stand at the driver side rear corner to guide the driver while backing up. There are so many obstacles that could cause problems when operating a motorhome in reverse, that an extra set of eyes is very helpful.

Overhead Clearance: It is imperative that the driver of an RV be very familiar with how high the clearance allotted for that vehicle is. Great care must be taken when pulling under gasoline station canopies, building overhangs, bridges, tree branches, fast food restaurant drive-thru lanes, etc.

Gerard Pedata of SellMyRVToday.com said, “Motorhome safety is not rocket science, it’s just plain common sense. You are driving a bigger vehicle than the family car; so more precautions have to be taken. You need to drive a little slower and be a little more vigilant about backing up and driving under structures.”

SellMyRVToday.com is a website run by one of the largest RV buyers in the country devoted to one thing: purchasing used RVs quickly and efficiently.
SellMyRVToday.com is not just another of the many consignment RV dealers; they’re professional RV buyers specializing in buying late model recreational vehicles and motorhomes including: Class A, Class B, Class C, Diesel Pushers, etc. If you have ever considered consignment RV sales, visit SellMyRVToday.com and learn the best way to get the sale done quickly and hassle free.

America's Campgrounds Are Increasingly Investing in Yurts to Provide Guests With A Unique Camping Experience

In the late 1200s, when Marco Polo made his historic journey to the Orient, he encountered the nomadic people of Mongolia who lived in circular tent-like structures with domed roofs. Conceived in ancient times, these structures, called yurts, had wood framing and were covered with animal skins, which were stretched tightly to provide protection from the elements. The domelike roof included a circular opening at the top, which encouraged natural ventilation while allowing sunlight to illuminate the interior.

But while yurts were originally designed as shelter for people who lived in some of the most inhospitable places in the world, yurts today are enjoying a renaissance of sorts in growing numbers of America’s campgrounds, which use modern canvass covered yurts to accommodate people who are looking for a unique outdoor experience.

And while families with kids like to stay in yurts for an unusual camping experience, couples like them, too. “They are very romantic and very popular because they offer a unique experience,” said Ande Rappaport, manager of Campfire Lodgings in Asheville, N.C., near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Campfire Lodgings’ yurts are set up in the woods for privacy and come with their own decks with gas grills. The domed ceilings can be opened and closed, depending on whether you want privacy or to enjoy the sunlight, the stars or the evening moon.

Cheri Ault, owner of Wagon Trail Campground in Door County, Wis., said yurts are perfect for people who want to rough it, but not too much. “They appeal to people who like to feel like they’re camping, but have a little more shelter around them,” she said. Ault has six yurts in her campground, which backs up against a 1,500 acre Nature Conservancy preserve along Lake Michigan. Campground operators, for their part, like yurts because they’re easy to book. “Once we get into our business season, our yurt will be booked every weekend,” said Carla Kaser, who owns the Beechwood Acres Camping Resort in Wilmington, Ohio.

GoCampingAmerica.com, the searchable database of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, does not yet have a search function to identify campgrounds that have yurts. However, the association plans to add yurts to its keyword search function this summer as part of a website redesign effort. In the meantime, consumers looking for campgrounds with yurts can do so by running Google searches using the terms “yurt” and “campground” and the state or region they intend to visit. The major yurt manufacturers, including Pacific Yurts and the Colorado Yurt Company, also have listings of campgrounds with yurts on their respective websites at www.pacificyurts.com, www.coloradoyurt.com.

Listings of private campgrounds, online reservation requests and other camping-related information is available at www.GoCampingAmerica.com. Contact information for the parks referenced above include:

Yosemite Pines RV and Family Lodging, Mary Bertram, (209) 962-7690 or Yosemite@yosemitepinesrv.comSacred Rocks Reserve and RV Park, located at 3,900 feet in the mountains east of San Diego, is first to offer consumers solar-powered park models. The 163-acre resort and wilderness preserve, located at the 3,500-foot level near the oak- and pine-dotted town of Boulevard, is the first RV Park in the nation to offer solar-powered park models, which can be placed on leased sites and used as a weekend retreat or vacation cottage.

Typically upscale in appearance, park models are 400-square foot movable resort cottages with bay windows and lofts that are designed exclusively for part-time recreational use. And because park models are technically classified as recreational vehicles, they can be set up on leased or purchased sites in campgrounds and RV parks and used as weekend retreats or seasonal vacation cottages.

The park models at Sacred Rocks Reserve are manufactured by Phoenix-based Cavco Industries, which has equipped its cabin- and cottage-style park models with solar panels that can save consumers anywhere between 25 and 75 percent on their utility bills. These environmentally friendly cottages, which are can be made using bamboo flooring and other recycled materials, come equipped with tankless water heaters as well as energy efficient light bulbs and kitchen appliances and dual pane windows.

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) Launches Value Kard Rewards program

This is the camping industry's first technology-based rewards program -- similar to loyalty rewards programs offered by airlines and hotels. It is an online-based program that offers campers their own personalized website (www.KOA.com) to monitor their rewards points, track their travels and list their camping preferences. The Value Kard Rewards program replaces the company's former Value Kard program which provided ony discounts, with a more sophisticated program that offers camprs a 10-percent discount on camping fees and rewards poins for each qualified stay at a KOA. Points can be redeemed for rewards certificates good for savings on future KOA camping.

Good Sam Club Tips on How To Avoid The Risks Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

As the nights get colder, keeping warm in your RV can be a challenge. Pile on the blankets and layers of clothes; cover the windows and seal all gaps entering your rig; but once you turn on a heat source, remember that the risk of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning rises.

Here are some ways to stay safe while keeping warm this winter…

1. If you haven't already, install a Carbon Monoxide Warning Detector.

2. If you have a CO monitor installed, test it to make sure it's working properly.

3. Never use open–flame heating in your RV without having a reliable Carbon Monoxide monitor.

4. If you use a propane or kerosene heater, always place it in front of a ventilation opening (such as a partially opened window or vent).

5. Yellow flames in propane–burning appliances such as coach heaters, stoves, ovens and water heaters usually indicate a lack of oxygen. If you see yellow flames, determine the cause and correct it.

6. Do not sleep with the generator operating.
.
7. Leave a roof vent open anytime the generator is running.

8. Don't park next to snow banks, buildings or other obstructions that might prevent exhaust gases from dissipating.

9. Inspect your RV's chassis and generator exhaust system regularly, especially if you've bottomed out.

10. Do not operate your generator if the exhaust system is damaged.

11. Seal any openings in the floor or sidewalls and apply weather strips to windows and door seals.

12. If you feel the effects of CO poisoning (which are similar to the flu: headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness) shut off the generator and step outside for some fresh air.

Read the EPA's Indoor Quality Guide for more information on Carbon Monoxide.

Winterizing Antifreeze Selection Tips Offered by the Good Sam RV Emergency Service

Do not use motor vehicle antifreeze in your RV's water system. Antifreeze designed for RVs is non–toxic and intended for consumption. How do they differ? The chemical propylene glycol (PG) used in RV antifreeze is USP grade – or food grade. RV antifreeze is also blended to prevent pipes from bursting and includes corrosion inhibitors designed for short–term protection.

When selecting antifreeze, use only non–toxic antifreeze designed specifically for RV use. Although there are several brands and types, consider the climate when selecting a specific type:

• Freeze Point – the temperature of the solution where ice crystals will begin forming.

• Burst Point – the temperature where the solution will begin to expand and cause the pipes to burst.

Use a Water-Bypass Kit

The additional time and minimal expense it takes to install a water–bypass kit on the water heater is well worth the ease of winterizing each year. You can purchase a kit at Camping World for under $20 and can either install it yourself or have it installed by a technician (about $75 installation fee). If you don't use a hot–water–tank bypass kit, you'll end up wasting money because you'll have to fill your entire water heater with antifreeze.

Compressed Air Method

An alternative to winterizing with antifreeze is to blow out the water lines with compressed air. Purchase an air–fitting adapter for the city–water connection and blow the air through the city–water hookup until all the water is removed from the hot–water tank. Close the bypass valve to the water heater, then blow the air through each faucet line, including the shower (with the faucets open). Open the toilet valve and allow the air to force any water out. Close all the faucets. Note: Don't exceed 40 psi when blowing out water lines in your RV.

Aspirinpod -- Can Save A Life!

You're on the range. Suddenly, you feel terrible pain spreading across your chest. It may be a heart attack and, heart attacks can kill. The Aspirinpod could make all the difference and save your - or someone else's life should they feel sudden pain coming on. How? it's a fact that chewing aspirin at the first sign of a heart attack can significantly improve the chances for survival, and the FDA reports that taking aspirin immediately when heart attack symptoms occur not only saves lives, but can also decrease heart damage. Studies show that chewing one uncoated 325 mg or four uncoated 81 mg aspirin immediately when heart attack symptoms first occur can increase your chances of survival.

New products are always coming out, but when I saw the Aspirinpod, I knew, immediately, that this product was not only unique, but a 'must have' for every member of my family and for friends as well.

The Aspirinpod is a red plastic tiny heart-shaped tiny container that holds one or two aspirin. It comes with a key chain that it can easily be placed in your glovebox, gym bag, bicycle, tool kit, handbag, yoga gear, ski jacket, golf bag, lunch box, bedside, tackle box, hunting vest, and dozens of other places. In less than a second, the container can be opened, the aspirin inside chewed, and together with calling 911, can save your life or that of a loved one. I placed one on my key ring so it will always be available.

Note: Do not take aspirin if allergic and ask your physician if aspirin is appropriate for you.

Aspirinpod can be purchased at drug stores, sporting goods stores, or is available by checking web site www.aspirinpod.com.SHOWERS

BASS PRO CAMPING TIPS from Larry Whitely

To make your next camping trip even better:

• An anti-static sheet, like you use in your dryer, pinned to your clothes will help keep insects away.

• Don’t drink apple, pear, or pineapple juice within three days of when you go camping. A chemical in these juices will mix with your perspiration and attract bees and wasps.

• Use dental floss instead of thread to repair a rip or tear.

• Always double check your flashlight batteries to make sure they are new or charged.

Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) Camping Tips

Before you leave:

--- Have your vehicle checked by a mechanic to make sure fluid levels are up, belts and hoses are in good condition, tires are in good shape and properly inflated, and other systems are tip-top.

--- If you're towing a travel trailer or fifth-wheel, make sure that everything inside the unit is operating correctly, inspect the tires and bearings, double-check that all components of your trailer hitch are properly secured and in good condition (both on your tow vehicle and on your trailer), and verify that your indicator lights and brake connections are working correctly.

--- If you travel in a motorhome and tow a car or other vehicle, make sure that your tow dolly is in good shape and that the indicator light connections- and brakes, if you have them-are functioning properly.

--- Leave a key with a neighbor or trusted friend who can check your home on a regular basis, care for pets, remove flyers from your door knob or steps, and make sure everything's okay. Leave this person a number where you can be reached, or an alternative means to get in touch with you, if necessary.

--- Make arrangements for all deliveries - mail, newspapers, etc. - to be held until your return. If these items consistently sit on your porch for hours until someone comes to pick them up, it's obvious that you've gone on vacation.

--- Buy electronic timers, and use them to set lamps and a radio to go on and off at various times throughout the day to give the illustion that someone is home.

--- Arrange to have yardwork done on a regular basis while you're gone. If your usually neat yard becomes a jungle, it tells potential burglars that your home is empty and an easy target.

TOOLS

Multi-Plier® 800 Legend® by Gerber

I used Gerber’s newest multi-function tool, the Multi-Plier® 800 Legend® when a screw fell out of my eyeglass frame; when I had to cut a piece of thread caught in a zipper; and when a friend needed a pliers to fix his car. No doubt this tool will come in handy for numerous other chores. The Legend is ideal for anglers, too, for its tungsten/cobalt carbide wire cutter inserts that will cut through hard carbon steel fishhooks or tough stainless steel offshore fishing leader, while the spring-loaded scissors can cut not only all braided fishing lines, but hemmed denim, leather, and more. The eight components-- a knife blade, scissors, interchangeable saw blade, Phillips screwdriver, small, medium, and large screwdriver, bottle opener, and a file--lock open once rotated into place and to unlock, users only have to slide the release button back and close the tool. I found this tool easy and comfortable to use;  its unique handle design has a broad, smooth surface for gripping; it comes with a sheath; and is backed by Gerber’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

WATER BOTTLES

SIGG Water Bottles

There's no need to spend money on buying single use water bottles at the supermarket -- when you can simply fill your own bottle with water from your sink and take it with you everywhere. And, you'll be saving the environment, too, when you use a SIGG water bottle over and over again for years to come.

If you recall, the headlines in 2007 headlines read: Disposable plastic water bottles are bad news. Diseases grow in them, landfills are full of them, and people just don’t recycle them.  Single use, disposable water bottles (PET plastic) create millions of tons of unnecessary waste each year. According to the Container Recycling Institute, less than 15% of plastic water bottles used in the U.S. are actually recycled. Over 100 million plastic bottles wind up in landfills – every day- and they take up to 1,000 years each to biodegrade!

SIGG bottles are designed to be reusable and are 100 percent recyclable at the end of their very long lives. Besides reducing the demand for petroleum-based PET bottles, SIGG is a proud member of 1% For The Planet, donating 1% of all sales to helping to preserve our environment.

Each SIGG bottle is designed and manufactured in Switzerland from a single piece of pure aluminum, perfectly extruded for uniform, seamless construction. The proprietary SIGG bottle lining is a water-based, non-toxic coating that is baked into the interior walls and remains flexible and crack resistant for the life of the bottle. This special lining is taste neutral and resistant to fruit acids and energy drinks, ensuring that your drinks taste like they are supposed to taste every time! SIGG bottles exceed FDA requirements for safety and have been independently tested to prove 0% leaching. SIGGs are an alternative to hard plastic containers which studies show may leach harmful BPA.

These lightweight, leak proof bottles are perfect for everyday use while the high-precision Swiss craftsmanship makes them durable enough for the most extreme adventures. SIGG bottles are beautifully designed, portable works of art that are a perfect blend of function and fashion. In fact, SIGGs can be found on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. New, fashionable styles are introduced each year with over a hundred unique styles. SIGG bottles come in several different sizes, in a rainbow of colors and designs with 3 unique interchangeable tops.

So whether you’re climbing the slopes of the Matterhorn or simplystrolling the streets of Manhattan, make sure you’ve got your SIGG with you to stay hydrated in style. SIGG bottles come in a variety of sizes and designs and retail for $16.99 - $24.99.

For further information or to purchase a SIGG go to www.mysigg.com. SIGG is also available at camping, sporting goods stores, REI, amazon.com, and more.
